Asbestos Awareness

Asbestos Awareness
This Asbestos Awareness eLearning course provides essential, concise training on asbestos — a hazardous material that may still be present in many buildings and workplaces. The course equips learners with the foundational knowledge to recognise asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), understand the health risks associated with exposure, and know what action to take if asbestos is encountered. It is designed for employees in maintenance, construction, facilities, and other roles where contact with asbestos is reasonably foreseeable, but not for those carrying out licensed asbestos removal work. This course supports compliance with relevant safety guidance by raising awareness of risks and basic control measures to prevent accidental exposure.
Course Aims
The primary aims of the Asbestos Awareness course are to:
- Provide foundational knowledge of what asbestos is and why it is hazardous to health.
- Help learners identify where asbestos and ACMs may be found in buildings and structures.
- Explain the short- and long-term health risks associated with asbestos fibre exposure.
- Highlight legal and regulatory expectations for awareness and reporting obligations.
- Develop safe behaviours so learners know how to avoid disturbing asbestos and how to respond if they encounter it unexpectedly.
Key Learning Outcomes
By the end of this 30-minute awareness course, learners will be able to:
- Define asbestos and explain why it presents a health risk.
- Identify common materials and locations where asbestos might be present in buildings.
- Understand the basic symptoms and long-term health effects of asbestos exposure.
- Recognise the importance of not disturbing suspected asbestos and the appropriate steps to take if it is found.
- Apply basic awareness principles to support a safer work environment and minimise exposure risk.
